3 Mad Skills You Already Have To Be Your Own Bookkeeper

Whenever I tell people that I am an accountant, after the “how do I save money on taxes” conversation we move onto the “i’m not good in math” comment. Oh really…even the easy kind of math?

Most people already have the skills to do their own accounting, they just don’t know it.

1) Do you know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide? If you’ve gone to public elementary school you should have this one down. A majority of accounting is adding and subtracting expenses, income, payments to loans, etc. It starts to get fancy when we divide numbers to get to percentages. All things you have already done before.

2) Do you know how to put things into categories? You also mastered this one in school. Instead of putting all the square shapes together, we put all the office expenses together, all the rent payments together, all the printing expenses together, all of the Sales together… you get the idea.

3) Do you have some discipline to make it a daily, weekly, monthly habit?Ok, I admit this one is a little harder, especially for the creative types. If you have time to check your bank balance online, you can add an extra 15 minutes to do the accounting (hint…use software as much as possible)

As you are starting out in your business, it is a good idea to take care of your books yourself. You’ll have a much better understanding of how to run your business.
